Build A Precision Engineered List

If you don’t build your list with precision you’ll find it hard to make money, because you won’t be offering things your list values. To be successful you should be building a list of like-minded individuals and communicating with them about their topics of interest.

To do this you must determine exactly who you want on your list. For example, if your products are related to goldfish you want goldfish owners on your list. Not pet owners, not tropical fish owners, but goldfish owners. Every subscription incentive you offer and email you send should be targeted precisely towards goldfish owners.

Know your target market exactly and focus your list building precisely at that target. Know exactly what they want and deliver excellent value to your subscribers. Hone your list building until you reach the point where the only reason people unsubscribe from your list is because they are no longer part of your target market and wish to go somewhere else for content.

Make your list precision engineered and you cannot fail.

Five Reasons To Have A List

It seems incredible to me that some people think that building a list is too much hard work and hardly worth the effort. Here are five reasons to have a list.

1. You can make money while building your business. With a list you can be promoting someone else’s product as an affiliate while you are creating your own products or services. Not only will your list help finance this initial growth, but it will also be an asset once you have something of your own to offer.

2. You can do market research for free. With a list you can ask your subscribers what they find challenging and what they are looking for. Their feedback and ideas will help you develop your products and services for a targeted, ready to buy audience.

3. You can increase your sales. It’s a fact of life that many visitors to your website will not buy your product or service on their first visit. You need to encourage them to view your offer again and again. You can do that if they’re on your list. It will also help you sell more to the people who do buy. If you cannot contact your buyers, you only make one sale per person. If they’re on your list you can offer them upgrades or products similar to the ones they have purchased.

4. A list helps you to building your brand. It allows you to establish rapport with your customers and stop you being lost in a sea of competitors.

5. A list is a resource that you can leverage when contacting other marketers. Your proposal for a joint venture will be taken more seriously if the other party knows you have a responsive list that they can promote to through you.

List Building – Everything Has Changed, Yet Stayed The Same

Online marketing has fundamentally changed in the last 10 years. The internet is more user-friendly, greater data transfer rates have made video viable and social networking sites have changed the nature of list building.

Traditionally you put an opt-in form onto your web page, wrote some follow-up emails and drove traffic to the form. Now social networking programs and sites like FaceBook, Twitter and YouTube have prompted a new type of list building. Now it can be more of a conversation than a pre-prepared speech.

Yet the fundamental secret to building a successful list is still gaining loyalty and forming lasting relationships with your subscribers, even if they’re called fans, friends or followers. In list building as with so many things, the more things change the more they stay the same.

Short of Incentive Ideas?

You’ll want a free giveaway as an incentive for people to join your list. If it doesn’t motivate your visitors to give their details in exchange it was a waste of effort getting them to your opt-in form or squeeze page. You should offer something that’s high quality and relevant to your market.

To endow the giveaway with a high perceived value consider what is being successfully sold to your market and create a shorter ‘lite’ version of a best sellling product. The existing demand for something similar should guarantee that people will be interested and therefore more likely to want your offer.

Your giveaway could be a pdf file, some software or a membership. If you are working on a product of your own you could even tie your giveaway into the pre-launch by offering a ‘leaked chapter’ of your product.

5 More Powerful Ways to Build a List

I’ve already mentioned 5 Powerful Ways to Build a List. Here’s five more simple strategies you can use for building your email list.

1) Squeeze Page

A squeeze page is devoted entirely to capturing a person’s email address in exchange for an offer. This is usually a free report or ecourse. This is very effective if you have the right offer.

2) Pop Ups

Pop up windows can be very effective at persuading people to sign up for your newsletter. These can either pop up as the visitor enters your site, after a timed delay, or when they leave, reminding them to sign up for more information.

3) Articles

Write articles and distribute them to article directories. Include a link to your newsletter squeeze page in the resource box and if you have provided good quality content you will get visitors who will sign up to learn more.

4) Viral Marketing

Viral marketing is where you give away something of value that people want to pass to their friends. It could be a video, a book, a game or anything similar. Whatever it is, it has your web address in it so people can visit and sign up to your newsletter.

5) Sign up bonuses

Offer your visitors a bonus if they sign up for your newsletter, e.g. “20% off XYZ for readers” or a number of e-books or reports that will be of interest to them.

Use just one or two of these simple strategies and you’ll start building a list that you can leverage to increase your reputation and earning power.

I’ve now listed 10 powerful ways to build a list but there are more. If you have a list building method that I have not mentioned please tell us about it.

The Opt-in Form – Is Yours Set Up Correctly?

An opt-in form is vital if you hope to build a list. The form needs to be in a prominent position on your web page, or as some form of pop-up. The best page position is usually near the top, but you need to check it is visible in the most common screen resolutions. Don’t have only one opportunity for people to opt-in to your list. Put the form on every web page.

Don’t ask for too much detail in your opt-in form. Just the basic name and email address should suffice. If you want more details you can ask for them after they have signed up.

You need to give your visitors a reason to subscribe, especially as they are likely to have busy inboxes already. You need to convice them that it will be worth receiving your messages. Clearly describe the benefits of subscribing. You could also offer a gift for joining. An ebook or short report may be appropriate. If you can ascribe a value to the gift people are likely to be more interested so add a statement like ‘subscribe in order to get a free gift worth $xx’.

You should also have a privacy statement like “We Respect Your Email Privacy” below or beside the form. This has been shown in many cases to increase the opt-in rate.

Once you’ve had the form running for a while you can split test elements like the free gift, headline or submit button to see if you can increase your opt-in rate.

A List Building Opportunity

I’ve already mentioned kick-starting or growing your list using Giveaway events (Giveaway Events – Getting by Giving).

Essentially a Giveaway is based around a website where internet marketers offer some of their products for free. There is nothing to pay, but to access a product an event visitor has to complete an opt-in form. This is the pay-off for the marketer. As well as showcasing some of their products they also get to build their list.

An Event starts by inviting marketers to contribute gifts. After a set period the event site is opened to the public and the list building begins. If you do not have a product of your own you can use websites like www.resellrightsweekly.com and www.resellrightsmastery.com which are great sources of free or low cost ebooks with giveway rights.

If you want to participate as a contributor and build your list the Goodfellas JV Giveaway is accepting contributors until 15th September, then the doors open to the online public until 3rd October. Simply click on the banner below and sign up to build your list.

5 Tips for Writing Effective Subject Lines

An email subject line has just one purpose. To get recipients to open your email. For this reason you should spend some effort crafting the best subject lines you can. It’s no use sending emails full of great information or fantastic offers if your customers are not going to open them. Given the importance of subject lines here are 5 tips for writing effective email subject lines.

1) Look at newspaper and magazine headlines. They have been designed to attract attention and encourage curiosity. Their only job is to get people to buy the publication, so you can imagine how much effort goes into creating  effective headlines.

2) Have a number of email clients so that you can see whether all of your subject line is visible. If it is not you may want to shorten it or write it in such a way that the shortened headline still arouses curiosity in the reader.

3) Urgency and scarcity tend to increase response. If you can legitimatley fit either or both into your headline do so, but don’t overuse this technique or it will lose its effectiveness.

4) Avoid a string of exclamation marks and any other content that will trigger spam filters. You don’t want to spend ages on a headline only for it to be the reason your message gets blocked.

5) Analyse past performance to guide what subject lines to use. In my post on a different way to use multiple lists I outlined a way you can split test subject lines. Set this up and let your customers show you what works.

How to Find the Offer that Builds Your List

I’m not aware of any commandments of internet marketing, but if there were surely one of the first would be “Thou shall capture the contact details of your website visitors.” This is simply because if you have no way to follow up with them you cannot entice them back to your website.

This is important because most people visiting a site for the first time have no intention of buying. They are usually looking for information and unless your offer can perfectly match their needs they will leave never to return. However, offer them something of value and at no cost and they might be willing to hand over their contact details for it.

It all sounds very simple and straightforward, but what if no one is opting in to your list? It could be that your visitors are not interested in your offer. You can find out if that is the case by putting an exit popup on your website. This will invite your visitor to answer a couple of questions before they leave. The majority will not want to respond but those who do give feedback may give you valuable clues as to what you should be offering. If this is of interest take a look at Survey Monkey and Objection Handler for a couple of options.

Once you have developed an email list you can send regular promotions and even broadcast a message to all your subscribers with a special promotion from your website or a joint venture with another internet marketer. Thousands can be made in just a couple of days with this kind of promotion so it’s well worth finding the offer that builds your list.
